Homeward bound, but before then…

With Matt and I planning a move back to California when I’m done with my Master’s degree, the logistics behind a move like that have been on my mind quite a lot lately.  To say I’m preoccupied with it is an understatement, I know I’m driving Matt nuts, but I’m excited with the decision and miss my family like crazy!  I think I actually miss them more now than I did before I planned to move back, which was already quite a lot.  I blame it on the anticipation of the move.  Before then, however, I have to get done with graduate school.

But then what?  How, exactly, does one make a huge move like that?  When I moved from California to Texas in 1999 I didn’t have anything.  Matt came to California with some friends, we loaded up the few boxes I did have into their truck, and headed for Texas.  Matt had an apartment, so we had somewhere to live, which made it much easier to move here.  This won’t be like that.  This will be much more complicated.  First, we’ll both be moving, rather than just one of us, as was the case in 1999.  We’ll have to find and secure a place to live, which won’t be easy since we’re 1,500 miles away.  We’ll have to find work, which, again, is difficult given the distance.  I mean, how do you interview for a job in another state?  Then, we’ll have to do something with the house we live in now, likely sell it, but it needs a few improvements before we can do that, things like new carpet — I could go on with all the things wrong with this house, but I’ll spare you, that’s a topic for another time.  Then, we have to get rid of everything we don’t absolutely have to move (like our sofa and love seat) and get a uhaul, or hire someone, to move the rest.

So much to think about and I have Matt telling me I shouldn’t worry about it yet, that we have plenty of time!  Ugh!  I want to worry about it, I’m concerned with the overall cost of the move.  I’d really like to browse the homes for rent and find one that suits us, but I don’t know if we’ll be able to afford to rent a house, they’re substantially more expensive than apartments.  I know that it’s too early to look at them now, but it wouldn’t hurt to watch the housing market out that way to help us better plan.

I’ve been thinking that maybe when I’m in the last semester of grad school I’ll start putting out resumes and see what’s out there.  Then, when I graduate, I could go to California for a week, or two, and start looking for work and a place to live.  That way, we can see what’s around.  I just don’t know, I’m a pretty organized person, but Matt’s resistant to planning.  We’re at something of an impasse.

All I know for certain right now is, I really just want to finish so I can move home!!

I really want you to finish so you can move home too!! :) Daddy and I can help you find a place to live…you can tell us what u would want to spend and kind of place and where you want and we can do the leg work…I know your standards, so I am sure you know that you can trust us. As far as finding work out here you will need to be somewhat flexible…that is to say if you put out a resume and someone wants to interview you, you may have to bite the bullet and get on a plane and come out to do that interview. Perhaps Matt could stay in Texas at first to sell the house and get the stuff ready to move…I know that you are usually the organizer so you could have the lions share of it done before you come. You, of course, can stay with us for a little while so you can get settled into a job and find a place to live if you haven’t already…. Ok there are some possible solutions…so stop worrying and just get busy w/ that degree honey!! haha

    Love you!! Mom

PS. When you do your cover letters to go with your applications and resume I would suggest that you indicate that you are a California native who attended college in Texas and are now ready to return home….It may help…I don’t know
