Happy Halloween!!

I just wanted to take a quick minute to say Happy Halloween!!  I love this holiday, but won’t be dressing up this year like planned.  I ordered my costume at the beginning of October but got my money refunded and a letter stating that the costume was out of stock.  So, c’est la vie!  But, I’ve already been eating candy corn this morning, so I’m in the spirit.  Since I won’t be dressing up this year, I thought I would share a picture from Halloween the past with you…

Forgive the grainy quality of the image, it was taken on film and then scanned.  I’ll skip the introductions because something tells me most of you have no idea who any of them are anyway and those who do, well, they don’t need introductions.  I’m the second in from the right, in the short red/silver dress with the leather collar.  In case it’s not clear by the short dress and abundance of make-up, I was a hooker in 1998, a costume comprised mostly of what was in my closet!!  What you can’t see from the image is that on my feet were the coolest boots ever, silver foiled 14-eye Doc Martins!  I loved those boots, I was with Sunshine when she bought them, and they were the last pair!

We had a good time that year!  The picture was taken in my mom and dad’s dining room.  I hope you all have  happy and safe Halloween this year!!  Eat too much candy, watch too many horror movies, and giggle too much at all the costumes!  I won’t be entertaining any trick or treaters this year, we live in a relative dark neighborhood, so it’s never a problem if the lights are off… and since it’s burnt out, we shouldn’t have too much trouble at all.

Happy Halloween!

Local legends, Halloween 08!

On Halloween this year, the department of English & Languages, my major department, is going to be doing a continuous reading of Washington Irving’s classic, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”  I got a flyer for the event in my email tonight, and though I’ve seen them around campus over the last week or so, tonight is the first time I’ve actually taken notice.

I’ve never head the story, so I think I may go! Well, everyone’s heard the story, but I’ve never read the original.  Don’t we all, after all, know the story of the Headless Horseman?  Most of us have even see Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp, that beautiful, beautiful man!  I might even try to convince Matt that he should go with me, or maybe Melanie and Joey?!  Or, heck, maybe all of them!

Of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” Google books says this,

“When Ichabod Crane becomes the new schoolmaster of Sleepy Hollow, he quickly and happily adjusts to the local ways. He delights in the bountiful dinners he’s served when visiting the prosperous farms of the region; he enjoys the local yarns and scary legends that fill the firelit evenings of autumn; and he comes to love the idea of marrying Katrina Van Tassel and of one day owning her father’s wealth and lands. There’s one problem with his plans, though: Brom Bones, the local hero, who decided long ago to wed Katrina himself. And now, to his annoyance, this pasty-faced bookworm named Ichabod is making a serious bid. This droll tale of romantic rivalry climaxes with the appearance of the Headless Horseman.”1.

If you’re in town, and I doubt most of you are, feel free to attend the reading.  If not, perhaps there’s something simular happening in your neighborhood.  Take a moment to enjoy the literature of yesterday during the weeks autumn holiday!

Grades, returned.

I have had a very nerve wracked day!  I went to class this morning expecting to have my British history test returned to me.  I did, in fact, have it returned, but what I didn’t expect is that my sociolinguistics professor would return the tests from that class as well!  I got both test I took last week back, and tomorrow, I’ll probably get back my proposal for technical writing, a proposal worth 20% of my grade.  I’m having a rough week, not because I have all this work due, but because my nerves can’t take the tension of getting grades back.  I’ve been worrying about the British history test since I took it, likewise with the sociolinguists exam… though it was a nervous day, it’s been a good one.

My first class is sociolinguists and when he handed me my test with a 9 on the front, I nearly fainted.  To make matters worse, my test was the first back.  If you received a 9 on an exam, you’d faint too!  Fortunately, when my friend’s exam came back with a likewise single digit number on the cover, I started to settle.  Apparently, the test was graded on a 10 pt., not a 100 pt. scale, so a 9 is an A.  He went on to explain that a 9 is a solid A, meaning it’s the equivalent of a 95! Yay!!  I got another A!  My previous test grade in that class was an A as well.

With that grade down, and quite pleased with myself, I trod off ot British history, nerves rising.  The test were graded, she came in carrying them, but she didn’t return them until the end of class.  Ugh! She also explained the grading so that we would all understand.  I thought I was going to die before she handed my test to me.  I took it, stuffed it into my notebook, and took out of the room.  It wasn’t until I was in the hall, halfway to the building’s door, before I had the nerve to open it up.  Even though she had explained that the grades were tallied up on the inside of the blue cover, I opened the bluebook to see a 40 in big red letters on the top of the first page and nearly had a heart attack.  I nearly cried, seriously, I studied for that test for hours… and hours… and hours… you get the idea.  I remembered about that time that the grades were on the blue page.  I turned the book over and gazed at the 92 with something like amazement!  Thank goodness!!  I made an A!  That test is literally half my grade and I got an A.  My professor spoke to me in the hall, she told me I did well and she was glad to see it!  It’s an awesome feeling.

Two A’s back today!!  Two A’s!!!  YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!  I’m fairly sure that my proposal in tech writing won’t score me an A, but if it does a B, I’ll be equally pleased.  Wish me luck on the tech writing grade, I’ve been pretty nervous about it since turning it in last Friday afternoon.  Oh, and to make matters worse, in less than two weeks I get to do a power point presentation for my tech writing class… yay.

Alive… barely…

It’s been a very long week and I’m exhausted.  I had two exams this week, one of which was the mid-term from hell, a five page proposal and another exercise for tech writing.  I’ve managed to get everything done, though barely!  I still have to turn in my proposal, by electronic submission and by hard copy tomorrow, and then I’m completely done!  Thank goodness this week is over!  TGIF, I mean that, for the first time since saying TGIF went out of style in like 1989 or something.  I am so glad it’s done.

To those who have sent me unanswered email, I’m sorry.  My time has been so short, I’ve not been able to get back to anyone.  No one’s been able to get me, not by phone, not by email, but I’m here and alive and you can all expect email soon.  I’m sorry I’ve been a horrible friend/daughter/blogger/correspondent of late.  I’m trying, but some things just don’t get done.  If it makes you feel better,  I think Matt’s even feeling somewhat neglected.  I promised to spend the day with him tomorrow and he deserves it, he’s been very patient, very understanding, very there for me, even though I’ve been absolutely terrible this week.

I’m gong now, just wanted to leave a quick update.  Matt’s calling and he’s offering to take me out to eat.  We’re both hungry, even though it’s midnight fifteen in the morning.  Thank the maker for Peacocks and their 24-hour open sign.

Good night.
